46 Million tax dollars for the Grand Rapids Home for veterans for maintenance?!

Ya'll remember Mrs. Winnie Brinks, the State legislator who was thrown out of the Grand Rapids home for Veterans which is in the district she represents in the Michigan Congress?

Well, according to her June 26th edition news letter:

A $37.3 billion budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 is on its way to Gov. Rick Snyder’s desk. House Bill 5313 was the omnibus budget containing funding for: LARA, the departments of Insurance and Financial Services, Education, Transportation, Michigan State Police, Community Health, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development, Environmental Quality, Corrections, Judiciary, Human Services, Military and Veteran Affairs, and General Government.

Highlights:

$46 million for special maintenance for the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans and $665,000 for oversight of the facilities to the Board of Managers at the Home. Special guidelines were also established to increase compassionate and quality nursing care services at the home so that members can achieve their highest potential of wellness, independence, self-worth and dignity.

Can someone tell me please, why does the Board of managers need 665 thousand dollars, and what that 6 hundred and 65 thousand dollars is going to be used for? For oversight of what? Hell, Earnest Meyers told one former member that he runs the place, and yet Meyers doesn't have a clue as to whats really going on there. Board member Leno Pretto supposedly went up to a member he wanted to talk to, and to whom he should have known, and when the veteran denied being himself, Pretto ended up walking away. DUH!  No idea who is whom, who lives at the home.

So what is the 46 MILLION for maintenance for? The home already got a special appropriations to fix the broken Chiller system. IS this for the 4th floor, that supposidly has been paid for already? 46 Million can practically rebuild the Rankin building.  Do they really need 46 million?

I cannot help but wonder and be concerned, that this money may be re-routed, misused and, or even out right stolen, instead of being used for its intended purpose, as other funds in the past have been.

Partial victory for Greg M, but Is the Board of Mangers still snubbing Greg?

Greg BEGGED me not to post this.. but I feel the man is getting shafted for a one time incident. And he serves as an example of whats wrong with the administration and the board of managers at the home.

Greg, I hope this doesn't get you banned again, if so, its my fault.

This blog is about the truth and the truth is you are getting screwed. - Angry.

Greg M Tells us his lawyer made a last ditch effort to bring a non judicial resolution to his on going mess with the Veterans home and the board of managers.

Greg tells us that his lawyer sent out the letters to every member of the board well before the scheduled May 22nd meeting. And finally, on June 8th, (according to their letter), the board (?!) has finally relented and are allowing him to return to Guitars for Veterans.

The board did NOT address his request to be able to go and visit the guys. Nor did they mention anything about a probationary period.  They are only letting him go to Guitars for Veterans meetings.

Guitars 4 Veterans are the National charity group chapter, which hold their meetings at the home, where they teach veterans how to play guitar and allow the veterans to earn a brand new one by graduating from the basic class. So far over 60 veterans have graduated from this group, and the Grand Rapids group is one of the first 5 chapters started in the nation.  The G4V main HQ is in Wisconsin and they can be found via Google, or on Facebook.

Now Greg claims he has NEVER been given the opportunity to present his discharge case to the full board. He says he filed a basic appeal in November 2012, and was told he needed to get outside counseling which he did, and for which he provided paperwork to the Board in June of 2013.

He then planned on presenting his whole case, at his second appeal, that he applied for in June of 2013, but his request to appear to the board was never answered until after he applied a 2nd time, in response to Chairman Meyers notice that he was to stay off property until the board gave him permission to return.

Finally in September, he was told to appear before the board, and chairman Meyers did not hear his case, but instead berated him for taking the advice of a lawyer, and ranted for 5 minutes on how he, the chairman ran the home and not a lawyer. He then tabled Gregs appeal until the October meeting and told him he would be notified to appear and to finish his appeal then. However then Chairman Meyers lied, and refused to hear the case, instead made a decision before the October Meeting, banning Greg from the property and tell him to take the case to court if he did not like the boards decision.

This is no longer about the fact that Greg blew his top when the home put a towing citation on his car, threatening to have it towed off the property, of which he thought they were intending to steal his car.
Nor that the home was in direct violation (a criminal act) of not having a licensed mental health expert on staff at the home, at the time of this incident.

And its not about the home not helping him nor providing any counseling when he needed it as a patient in the Dorm Unit.

This is not about the fact that in his panicked state of mind he threatened to remove the head of anyone who had his car towed in writing instead of going down to the office and screaming it at the top of his lungs 3 inches away from staff members faces, which would probably have gotten him a few days time out instead of a discharge.

This is not about the fact that the home denied him any Administrative due process before they decided to discharge him 5 days after they made their decision.

Let me say that again. They waited 5 days to notify him of his discharge. If he was a threat to safety of any one at that institution they would have had him removed immediately.

This is not about safety of any of the members, or the staff. If they had really felt threatened, they would have had him removed from the home the same day they decided to discharge him.

Greg was banned from the property since his discharge of Oct 10, 2012, and for a while was homeless. During that time, he made a mistake and went on home property after taking the advice of a lawyer he talked to on the internet.

And during the time that Greg mistakenly went on home property during the 3 week period of Last week of July and first 2 weeks of August 2013, Where many staff who knew him saw him, if they had felt any threats to their safety they would have had him removed immediately. They did not.

Not only did they not have him removed; during one of the visits a volunteer group was doing a cookout for the vets, and the Activity director for Rankin 3 (dom unit) served 2 visiting veterans including Greg, a plate full of food. Now if Dianna Knoll though he was a threat to anyone's safety, would she have done that? Also Josh the security guard and Mr. Thomas, head of the homes Security Department, saw and talked with him that day.. No one did anything.  So whats the real reason here for keeping him from being able to visit his friends? Just because he lost it one time?

2 years at the home without a single incident and then 1 big one that got him kicked out.

No this is about a short period of time (the 3 weeks mentioned above)  when there was a misunderstanding, and one Egotistical board member, who lied to Greg and again denied him proper administrative due process.

Greg has never harmed anyone at the home. And its time to bring this petty bullshit to an end. He is willing to let the past be the past, and to move on to the future. But he cannot if this injustice is allowed to continue.

He just wants to go visit friends and return to instructing as an instructor with the Guitar 4 Veterans group that meets at the home once a week, the latter which has been granted, but only under specific circumstances. The person in charge of Guitars 4 Vets is being held responsible for Gregs behavior. There won't be any problem there.  However, they are saying that since Greg will not volunteer as a registered volunteer (he didn't even know he could do that and is still not sure he can), they treating him with special circumstances.

This is not about Earnest Meyers chairman of the board at the time, lying to Greg at the Sept 2013 board meeting where Meyers chewed him out for 5 min's about taking the advice of a lawyer.

This is not about Earnest Meyers and the boards ignoring the testimony given by 2 top level volunteers who said the would like to see him come back.

This is not about the fact that Greg had more people to testify if needed, but since Meyers lied to him about returning to the October meeting, Greg was unable to call those witnesses on his behalf.

This is not about the fact that at the time, Meyers was supposed to be the Ombudsman for the veterans at the home, speaking on their behalf - which he did NOT do.

No, this is an abuse of power being over used for a petty incident.  And its time to stop it.

Rumor has it, that Meyers brought up the latest request by Greg and his Lawyer. Greg has also stated that every member of the board was sent a copy of that letter by his attorney, so why did Meyers bring it up? The new Chair person should have done so. Is the Home interfering with the mail? As that is where I assume the letters were sent as it is the official mailing address according to the Michigan Veterans website.

So what is next? Since the letter sent to Greg did not mention any chance of his being able to visit friends under the same rules/laws that apply to any other visitor, what are his options? Few if you ask me.

Greg says he is grateful that the board is allowing him to return to Guitars. But wishes he could come and visit friends during regular visitation hours just like anyone else can, subject to the same rules as any other visitor.  He just wants to do Guitars 4 Vets, and to be able to visit with friends. Nothing more.

I say he is still getting shafted by the administration and the board.

James Dunn Cheif of Staff MI Dept Vet Affairs Goes to GR Vets Home, and does what?!

WOW,, I wish I was there for this one.. but I am hearing rumors from several sources on this..

We know for a fact that James Dunn, the Chief of Staff of Michigan Department of Veterans Affairs, did in fact, go to the Grand Rapids Veterans Home to talk to veterans.. After that things get a little fuzzy..

One report says he was there to meet specifically with 6 of the Dorm unit guys to answer questions that were already submitted to him..
That seems kind of odd to me. Why would he drive all the way from Lansing just to talk to 6 people?

The OTHER report is that a group of veterans waited for him in the APR Room at the home, and when he arrived, and found out there were about 100 vets wanting to talk to him, he decided not to, and to only address the vets in the Dorm unit.
What happened here? Who did what to who?

There is also a rumor going around that a petition has been started to get Jim Dunn removed from his job.

It has also been reported that someone was going up and down the hallways saying the meeting was "illegal"..  What the hell is an "illegal meeting"?    The vets at the home have a right to assemble and have any kind of meeting or gathering that they want to have. With or without staff members present.
This is a common right secured by our nations Charter, and our State's Charter. And one of the rights the home trys to violate every time it can.

Many think that is why Congressperson Winnie Brinks was told to leave the property - because she had a meeting with a member without staff approval or their presence at the meeting.

Either way, one thing is for sure:

It has been my experience that people see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear, and believe what they want to believe, no matter what REALLY happens.

The Union was right, and We told you so; underpaid workers result in substandard care of veterans.

Right from the Board of managers minutes.

Kevin M. a member of the Veterans home, voiced his concern over the lack of pay for the J2S contract workers, and stated that he and other members think that their low pay contributes to the high turnover rate of J2S workers. This results in veterans getting new people all the time and that makes them very very nervous.. (not to mention the high theft rate going on at the home).

The Union warned you: Lower paid health care workers will result in lower care and substandard care  being given to veterans.

Well there ya go.. A direct report from one of the members that is ON RECORD of the High Turnover rate of the LOWER PAID workers that replaced State workers who stayed ON the job, while these contract workers work a few weeks then leave.  This is NOT good for our veterans.

And to think that Jim Dunn is STILL telling the state legislature that our veterans are getting good health care.. BULLSH*T!

Board of Mangers finally relents: Gives Greg M permission to Return to Guitars for Veterans.

May Board of manager meeting minutes have been posted, and we find that the board has given Greg M. permission to return to Guitars for Vets.

Click here to get the pdf file of the board minutes.

Just called Greg. Had a nice conversation with him, but he is a little confused. The letter he got did not address the 2nd issue.

Greg said that while hes disappointed that the board will not allow him to return as a visitor, he is grateful that the board has given him the chance to prove that he is not a threat to anyone at the home and that yes, he can follow the rules.

The board is allowing him to go to the guitars meetings ONLY at this time.  They are not allowing him to come on the property for any other reason at this time, nor did they address any future possibilities of that happening.

Greg told us that his lawyer sent the letter requesting his return, and offering a probationary period, which itself was not mentioned by the board either..

So hes going to give it a few months, and apply again for return to Visitor status, after hes established a record that hes not there to cause harm, or raise a ruckus.. and that hes just there to play guitar and visit the guys..  Greg says he will probably reapply after January.

Fact or Fiction?

After spending a long day at work, I again find myself looking at this large stack of notes on my desk regarding the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. In attempting to sort thru it, some interesting things have surfaced and I am asking for your help for clarification.

What I am looking for is anybody who can verify any of the following.

----- Before Sara took over as Administrator of the Home, we had Brig. General Carol Ann Fausone. I have been asked to verify that the General was escorted out of the Home in handcuffs, only to return the next day, free as a bird. The General is currently a Republican candidate for State Representative in the 21st District which is the 21st state district.  With her platform being one based on experience, leadership and integrity, I would like verification of what is allegedly being said about her. I think you agree that the residents in that voting district have a right to know. Of course, with her husband Jim being a lawyer who fights for veterans, it is easily understood how all this might have gotten shoved under the rug AND how this could be a conflict of interest.

----- Now this is a delicate issue I would sure like to have verified. Once upon a time, there was a man named Eric. I believe that Eric did some accounting and finance work at the Home. I have been asked to validate that Eric and our fine lady administrator, Sara, enjoyed some :intimacy” on the Conference Room table. Did this really happen? Is it true that the security officer and house cleaner who witnessed this were immediately dismissed? Is it also true that this security officer is now a member of Kent County’s finest?

Many questions and I have no answers. Somebody out there knows the details of all of this. Can you come forward and let me know? Trust me. Your anonymity will be kept. A reporter such as I would never reveal my source.

 -Joe

Correction:

Retired Brigadier General Carol Ann Fausone is the owner of a small business called The Veteran Advocate. Carol Ann Fausone is running for state representative in District 21 which includes Canton (her hometown), Belleville and Van Buren Township (not county) . Please note correct area of her campaign. Her husband Jim (a lawyer) can currently be heard on Veterans Radio on a station in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

End.

Wondering, If this person was a good administrator, why isn't she there now?
-Joe

Update: 27 June 2014. I had a lunch meeting today at the Veterans outreach center on Century Ave down town, to give a presentation on veterans benefits and where guys can get help. There I ran into Dan, aka  "scooter", a former member of Rankin 1, which is a nursing unit at the home.

Dan said he was sitting out side the front entrance when a US Air Force Master Sargent came in and placed then Administrator Carol Fausone, in hand cuffs and took her off the property. She returned the next day.

Dan said he left the home in 2012, due to the fact that the home was taking all of his money, and that they took 4 million from him.

Now I seriously doubt they took 4 million from Dan. But hes not the only one to tell me about the handcuff incident.  That is why we are asking for information, so that we can get to the bottom of this.

Vets Home on man hunt for Blog Authors, even when they should already know who they are.

Oh My God. This really takes the cake. I mean how incompetent can these administrators be?

4 years on this blog and they still don't know who the 2 authors are? I have personally claimed credit for it over 40 times in the last year, while visiting people at the home, both Veterans and Staff!

I stopped in Friday after going to the clinic for an ultrasound and visited with a few guys. And now I am being told by several residents there, that the home is on a man hunt to find out who Joe and I are, believing we are either one of the residents, or volunteers.

Again, for the record, Joe and I are FORMER members of the DOM unit. Joe and I left of our own free will, unlike many who were just kicked out to the street. We do not reveal our true ID's because if we did, our friends at the home would pay the price.  That is how this administration works.

And I wonder, what are they going to do when they do find out who we are? Are they going to try to ban us from the property as they have so many people?  <snicker>  Because that is about the only thing they will be able to do.

This all points out to the fact that the home is being run by a group of  egotistical maniacs who expect people to kiss their ass if they want to be able to participate at the home (if they are outsiders), or if they want to continue living at the home if they are residents.

Apparently the administration is very very upset about the fact that at least 2 people are exercising their right of free speech, (Joe and I), exposing the corruption, wrong doings, and shear incompetence of the administration while at the same time exposing the abuse of the veterans by the administration or its policies.

To this I have to say: TOO Damn BAD!  Get over it. This is America and we have FREE SPEECH here.

If you don't like it, Leave a comment that does not attack the blog authors, and that adds some real information to the subject at hand.  Or better yet, Start your own Blog.

But wait!

GRH4V can't do that because their main activities person can't even boot up a computer, let a lone figure out how to use one; isn't that right Tiffany?

Also, we show support for the Administration when it does something right as we did during the past Christmas fiasco, that was done by a family member of one of the residents.

One of the staff members is Mr. Anonomus.

Interesting.. That the fellow whom has been leaving comments here seems to be one of the staff members who refuses to identify themselves.

The owner and publisher of this blog have chosen not to reveal their ID's,  due to the fact that the home has established that they will take revenge on the friends of these people, if they find out who they are. Guilt by association is normal policy for the home.

The fact is, those who need to know, already know.  But since the home has an established pattern of violating the states (and federal) law,  why give them more to break? This blog is protected free speech and if you don't like that fact, stop reading it. No one forces you to click on it, nor to read the articles posted.

This blog will stand by the home when it is right and blast it when it is wrong and as long as it continues to mistreat veterans and it will report about the poor management of the home which uses taxpayer dollars.
